Finding South

Use a standard compass to locate south—the side of your building that receives the most sunlight at noon. Alternatively, open Google Maps or a compass app on your phone to determine the south direction. If surrounding buildings block your view, your reception will suffer. Metal blinds, screens, trees and shrubs can all obstruct the signal. Moving the antenna around can sometimes still yield a usable signal. The best location is near a window or an open area. Height also matters; raising the antenna can improve signal quality. Check the signal indicator or antenna-aiming screen to gauge strength. In major population centers, terrestrial transmitters supplement satellite signals; in such areas you may not need to point strictly south.

Exceptions to South

Depending on your region, other directions may work better:

• Northwest U.S.: east or northeast.
• Southwest U.S.: north or northeast.
• Southeast U.S.: north or northwest.
• Northeast U.S.: west or northwest.
• Upper Central Plains: point straight up.

Vehicles are different; mount the antenna at the highest point of your car or truck to maximise exposure. Installing it securely can be tricky, so consider a professional installer. Certified Sirius radio installers can conceal the cable from the external antenna to your in‑dash receiver.

Reception Problems

If none of the above methods work, consider purchasing an outdoor antenna that can be mounted as high as possible on your property. Pole mounts can reach even greater heights.
